Five Spice Meatballs w/ Plum Sauce

Bee's Baking - Five Spice Meatballs with Plum SauceAdapted from Australian Good Taste


500g beef mince
1 brown onion, finely chopped
2 teaspoons ginger, grated (or ground)
1 teaspoon Chinese 5-Spice
125ml (½ cup) plum sauce
3 tablespoons mirin (rice wine) seasoning
2 tablespoons soy sauce
Salt & pepper, to taste
Olive oil, as required
Steamed rice and steamed Asian greens, to serve


1. Cook onion until soft over medium heat (~5 minutes)
2. Add 5-spice and ginger to onion and continue cooking 1 minute until aromatic, then set aside to cool for 5 minutes
3. Combine mince and onion mixture in a bowl and roll into tablespoon-sized balls (~16)
4. Allow to refrigerate for 20 minutes before cooking over medium-high heat for 8-10 minutes until cooked
5. Combine plum sauce, mirin, and soy sauce in a jug
6. Pour sauce mixture over the meatballs and cook until heated through
7. Serve with rice and steamed Asian greens
