Frikkadels (Brasied Meatballs)

Bee's Baking - Frikkadels (South African Braised Meatballs)Adapted from Manila Spoon


For the sauce

400g (1 tin) diced tomatoes
1 large onion, chopped
3 cloves (~15g) garlic
10g brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 to 1½ teaspoons mild curry powder
270ml coconut milk (optional)

For the meatballs

500g beef mince
45g quick oats
1 egg
25g chutney (ideally Mrs. H. S. Ball’s Original Recipe Chutney, or mango/apricot)
30ml rice vinegar
1 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
½ teaspoon cinnamon, ground
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon coriander seeds, ground
⅛ teaspoon cloves, ground


1. Preheat oven to 160°C/325°F in a conventional oven (reduce by ~20°C/70°F using fan-forced)
2. Cook onions and garlic in a dutch oven on the stovetop (use oil if required) for 5 minutes until soft
3. Add tomatoes to the onions and garlic, allowing to simmer for another 5 minutes
4. Add the remaining sauce ingredients and simmer, covered, until meatballs are prepared
5. Mix all ingredients for the meatballs in a bowl until combined
6. Form mince mixture into large balls around 2-2½ inches in diameter
7. Place meatballs in the sauce, then cover the pan and place in the oven
8. Cook for around 1-1½ hours until cooked
9. Serve with rice, noodles, mashed potatoes, chutney etc.

Nutritional Information

– Recipe yields 4 servings (recipe should make ~12 meatballs total)
– Each serving (without condiments or sides) contains ~385 calories, 23g carbs, 35g protein, and 15g fat
