Apple Crumble

For the topping:

75g plain flour (½ metric cup)
40g dessicated coconut (½ metric cup)
100g brown sugar (½ metric cup) 
90g butter, softened

For the filling:

5 tart apples (e.g. Granny Smith)
1 tablespoon water
¼ teaspoon cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
⅛ teaspoon cloves
20g raisins (optional)


1. Preheat oven to 160°C/320°F in a conventional oven (reduce by ~20°C/70°F using fan-forced)
2. Place flour, coconut, and brown sugar into a medium bowl
3. Rub butter through the mixture with fingertips until a crumbly texture is achieved, then set aside
4. Peel, core, quarter, and chop the apples into thin slices (should yield ~560g)
5. Toss apples with spices, water, and raisins (more, less, or even none fine)
6. Spread apples evenly into lightly greased dish, top with crumble mixture (and a sprinkling of cinnamon if desired)
7. Bake for ~25 minutes until apples are soft and topping has darkened
